Pineapple

India is the fifth largest producer of pineapple. Other leading producers are Thailand, Nigeria, Mexico, Indonesia, Colombia, USA, Philippines, Brazil and China. The pineapple was introduced to India by Portuguese in 1548 AD. Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Manipur, West Bengal, Kerala, Karnataka and Goa are the top cultivators of pineapple and small-scale cultivators are Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
The scientific name of Pineapple is Ananas comosus. It was named "pineapple" by the European explorers due to its resemblance to a pine cone. In many countries, fruit has a name similar to "ananas" that comes from the Tupi word nanas, meaning excellent fruit. The pineapple is a tropical plant, which grows up to 1.0 to 1.5 meters.
